Off Grid Workshop w/ Michael Shemchuk
REGISTER: https://www.airstudios.art/store/p/michael-shemchuk-off-grid
When: October 14-18, 2024
Where: Jen Tough Gallery / AIR Studios Santa Fe
About this workshop: Off Grid: An AbD workshop with Michael Shemchuk (Shem)
“Look Between the Rain”
Artist Agnes Martin’s quote “Look between the Rain” has philosophical depth. Inviting us to observe the space in between.
The Off Grid workshop focuses on this In Between space by adopting a minimalist viewpoint.
We begin with the practice of editing and limiting both our palette & materials. These limitations can be a challenge but also act as a pathway to effectively guide us in making more thoughtful material and design choices.
At it’s core, the in between concept is a meditative tool designed to aid us intuitively with our visual expansion.
Join me in discovering that in-between space as you focus on and apply the Abstraction by Design techniques to create your three panel triptych of spatial harmony.

Claudia Hollister: Beyond the Blues: An exhibition of Cyanotypes and collage
Artist Statement : Beyond the Blues
Beyond the Blues has stretched my vision of creating cyanotype collages in scale and scope. This is the first time introducing hand tinted colors to my work. It was a long process to find the right mediums to give me the desired effects, ultimately, alcohol inks were chosen for the transparency and the watercolor for its rich opacity.
My process involves alchemy, nature, artistic license, technology, and timing. During COVID lockdown I started documenting my garden. I photograph in my studio in natural light using my iPhone, then create a negative, printed on transparency film. The film is placed under glass, on paper coated with a UV sensitive solution, and set in the sun until it is developed. Dropping the exposed paper in water, watching the magic as the print oxidizes and the positive image appears.
This is the fourth year documenting the cycle of seasonal blooms in a uniquely beautiful and sometimes mysterious format. I continue to bring a new perspective to this historic process. As I expand my vision into creating a vintage modern feel ranging in depth of color and compositions using garden flowers.
Visual Poetry consists of cyanotype collages that show case my garden flowers and collection of antique vessels. The floral narratives are enhanced by the use of paper backgrounds often printed with unusual materials. The Muses,Mermaids and Nymphs, are sweet small framed cyanotype collages. They consist of direct contact prints from plants in the background and photographic prints in the foreground.
My garden is my sanctuary where I go for pleasure, to remember those I love, and to find solace. This show is dedicated to my sister Laura who recently past, but not before seeing her beautiful garden one last time.

About this exhibition:
This work, all completed recently, is a combination of new techniques like alcohol inks, gel prints and oxidized surfaces with encaustic.
Thinking about Santa Fe where this work will be shown, directed me to a palette of rich rusty
reds, browns and coppery green blues, natural elements and special objects that have a mystical or spiritual feel.
It was fun to work with some new challenges in both the techniques and color palette while revisiting assemblage which I don’t make as often these days.
Seth Apter: 5-day workshop (sold out)
June 3 - 7, 2024, AIR Studios Santa Fe
Found & Gathered is a 5-day retreat that will enable you to immerse yourself in the creative process. The experience begins the moment you register as you source, find, and gather your own personal collection of papers, fibers, ephemera, and other bits & pieces that will become the basis of your creation. As the workshop begins and unfolds, we will gather together, both within the workshop space at AIR Studios and at some secret sites in Santa Fe. You will spend your time transforming your treasures into a series of what might loosely be called artist books. Some will be stitched and bound, some will be loose and some will simply be scraps floating in between. See the accompanying images to get a better sense of the project.
The instruction offered throughout, to the group as well as one-to-one, will cover the range of techniques used in mixed media: surface designing, using paints and inks, hand stitching, book binding, rusting, dyeing, embossing, mark making, gel printing, collaging, creative layering, and more. The workshop is designed to alternate between focused instructional demonstrations and uninterrupted art making – allowing you to learn new techniques, styles and approaches AND offering you precious time to get into the zone. This structure enables everybody the opportunity to work at their own comfortable pace in their own comfortable space. The group share at the end of the workshop is the perfect way to ease out of the magic of our time together back into our own outside worlds.

Alexis Mixter: Solo Exhibition
Opening Reception: Saturday, May 11, 4:00-6:00
•
The work of Alexis Mixter is rooted in the time taken to make a single line. The inability to rush through this process. It is about the smell of the wood as it burns and the texture of the lines as they form. It is about trying to control that which is so very difficult to control through patience and the tactile connection to the wood.
•
Using an ancient technique typically associated with “masculine” hand-crafts and easily recognizable imagery, and repurposing it through abstraction and the influences of “traditionally feminine” things such as braided hair and weaving, Alexis finds something entirely new.
•
Each piece invites the viewer inside, like a portal, and asks you to spend time there. To see how it feels. In a world designed to pull our attention continuously in different directions, all at the same time, these pieces are moments of stillness and reflection. No matter what you see or feel when interacting with the work, it presents a meditative moment.
•
Alexis Mixter was born in New England in 1978. She received her BFA from The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City with a focus on painting and art theory in 2004. Since graduating from college, one of her main objectives has been to encourage and uplift other emerging artists. Alexis was co-founder of the artist collective 121 Ludlow in New York City, before moving to California in 2009. Having exhibited her work everywhere from Hudson Valley in Upstate New York to Southern California she now resides in Southern Oregon.

Collage Journeys Santa Fe
Collaging your Journey is a fresh new workshop that I have designed just for Jen Tough Gallery and Santa Fe. I love New Mexico and find it to be an amazing place of constant inspiration and creativity. If you love to collage, paint, assemble, stitch, experiment and following your muse, this class is for you!
In this workshop I will guide you in different collage and painting projects, all with unique twists. We will use fabric, paper, and hand stitching to create unique landscapes and abstract collages. To house our creations, we will nest and loosely arrange them inside of old book covers that you source ahead of time. Some pages will be tied and wrapped, others will be stitched into beautiful bundles of textures, patterns, and symbols.
Our work will be expressive and multi-dimensional, with added attachments of natural and found objects, mark making, symbols and Asemic writing. In our work we will capture the quiet beauty and luminous light of the desert, the shapes, and the colors of Santa Fe.

Susan Melrath: 5-day workshop
Sold Out / Waitlist
Susan's workshop on color and composition is a great opportunity for artists to enhance their understanding and skills in creating strong compositions. As many painters know, it’s easy to be dazzled by color, or to become so engaged in our subject matter that we lose sight of the overall design until it’s too late.
This workshop highlights the notion that every composition is essentially an arrangement of simplified shapes. Artists can effectively curate and organize their compositions by developing an awareness of these shapes and their relationship to one another from the inception of the work to the finishing marks. This “abstract thinking” is at the heart of mastering strong composition in representational art as well as non-objective art.

Opening Reception: Rhenda Saporito
Jen Tough Gallery is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of Rhenda Saporito
•
On view November 11 - December 18
•
Opening Reception: Saturday, Nov 11, 4:00-6:00
•
Rhenda Saporito is an abstract painter. She studied color theory, abstract painting, life drawing and sculpture at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts. She has a concentration on abstract artists including Diebenkorn, De Kooning, Rauschenberg and Joan Mitchell. Participating in workshops and residencies with several internationally known artists continues to further her practice. She activates the canvas with random marks to break up the surface. When developing a painting, her focus is an intuitive application of mixed media. With no regard for the end result, the path takes her into and out of chaos. The painting becomes pared down and the viewer may find a resting place. Her paintings are visual expressions of previous experiences. She works on large canvasses-some as large as fifteen to eighteen feet long by six feet tall.
