BIO
Jill Haas grew up in Lancaster, Pennsylvania where her mother and grandmother painted watercolor botanicals that filled the walls of her childhood home. Her grandfather, a botanist by hobby, created new varieties of lilies; her father taught her how to sail, inspiring a love of wind and water. Her admiration for the natural world is expressed in the plant portraits she creates on canvas and panel. An award-winning animator and illustrator, Haas credits her penchant for using sharp edges and flat shapes to her 30-year career working with digital vector images.
Haas has exhibited with Denise Bibro Fine Art, New York, NY; Visionary Art Collective, New York, NY; Paradigm Gallery, Philadelphia, PA; Bridgette Mayer Gallery, Philadelphia, PA; Da Vinci Art Alliance, Philadelphia, PA; and many others. She was featured in Art Delivery by The Jealous Curator, Art Seen Magazine, and ART PXV Magazine in 2024. Her work lives in private collections throughout Pennsylvania, New York, Rhode Island, and California. Haas graduated from the University of Delaware and studied painting privately.
STATEMENT
Botanicals have influenced my life and work since I was young. I was surrounded by family members who mirrored the world that surrounded them: my mother and grandmother painted flowers in a sunny atelier in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and my grandfather was a botanist by hobby. I feel an innate connection to plants and nature, and I endeavor to parallel this in my work.
Humans and plants have a unique synergy. We often believe ourselves to be separate from plants and nature, when actually, we live in it, depend upon it, and are culturally intertwined with it. Plants provide us with medicine, food, shelter, and the air we breathe. They are used for recreation, ceremony, adornment, and fashion.
The silhouettes in my work bring to mind a presence and absence. They are vestiges of ancient cycles in a time of modern systems, reminders of what we have lost but also what we can nurture. I use silhouettes as a visual alliteration: by repeating my subjects I’m emphasizing their value and importance, metaphorically propagating each plant to counteract the disappearance of natural habitats.
I aspire to activate the viewer with an up-close, intimate point-of-view of my subjects, to simulate the feeling of being enveloped and supported by nature. I’m hoping to inspire others to consider their relationship with plants and join the ever-growing chorus of voices calling for their protection.
